Humboldt County Remembers Harvey G. Harper

Harvey G. Harper was born in Eureka, California to pioneer automobile dealer Harvey M. Harper and his wife, Maisie. He was educated in local schools including Washington Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School, Eureka High School, and Humboldt State University. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University in 1941. During World War II, he served in the Navy at the Farragut Naval Training Station at Lake Pend Oreilli, Idaho.

The family business, Harper Motors, was established by Harvey M. Harper, Harvey G.’s father in 1912. In 1943, at 25 years old, the firm of Harvey M. Harper Co. was incorporated with Harvey G. becoming a stockholder and president of the company. 

Harvey Harper has actively engaged in serving Humboldt County’s community for many years. His service includes membership on the Eureka City Planning Commission, member of the Humboldt County Fair Board, past president of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the St. Joseph Hospital Advisory Board, and past president of the Ingomar Club. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Eureka since 1942, serving as president during the 1950-51 year. In addition, Mr. Harper continuously contributes to countless worthwhile organizations throughout Humboldt County.

Accolades Mr. Harper has collected include Time-Life Automobile Dealer of the Year, Humboldt County Republican of the Year, Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen of the Year, and Rotary Club Honored Member.

He passed away at his home in Eureka on November 2nd, 2010.
