Eureka City Council to Proclaim June as Romano Gabriel Month
Eureka Mayor Frank Jager and the Eureka City Council will proclaim June as “Romano Gabriel Month” during their Council meeting on May 17.
The Eureka City Council is recognizing “Romano Gabriel Month” at the request of North Coast Dance. North Coast Dance will premiere a sophisticated dance / theatre piece titled, Gabriel’s Garden, on June 17, 18 and 19 at the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts. The production pays homage to the life and folk art created by Romano Gabriel.
North Coast Dance, a non-profit organization, received a $25,000 grant from The James Irvine Foundation to produce the performance. Many of the characters in Gabriel’s Garden are based on the actual statues that adorned Gabriel’s wooden garden, which he built in front of his Pine Street home in Eureka.
Upon Romano Gabriel’s death in 1977, the Vellutini family restored his works and received a grant from the California Arts Council to create a permanent home for his artwork. Gabriel’s wooden sculpture garden is housed in a kiosk located at 315 2nd Street in Old Town Eureka.
