Arcata Recycling Debate To Go Before Council
The Arcata recycling debate will be presented to the city council tomorrow, but will not proceed with Arcata city attorney Nancy diamond who recused herself from the proceedings to avoid a possible conflict of interest…
The Arcata city council will come face to face with the city’s disposal needs on Wednesday, when they’ll hear from residents and decide:
“Whether to sign on with the memorandum of understanding and the contract to award to solid waste of Willits, or to consider other options.”Said Mark Andre, Arcata Director of Environmental Services.
The issue of outsourcing Arcata’s recycling needs might be resolved tomorrow, after the issue began when solid waste of Willits underbid local business Arcata community recycling. The city council will have a few issues to consider.
“There’s the issue of cost, the issue of assuredly, cause we'd like to have cost control if possible, there's the issue of jobs and we'll hear about that too...” said Andre
They certainly will, as one of the biggest criticisms has been the possibility of more than thirty jobs being cut as a result of the potential move, but the city says it’s growing recycling needs have to be considered.
“Ideally you try to keep it all together in the county, as far as economies of scale, but you can't always do that, so we're going to look at every option closely...”Said Andre
“Our city attorney, Nancy diamond, is also the legal council for Humboldt waste management authority, so on this item she'll be recusing off this item...” Said Andre
The city plans to use a different attorney for the matter, and whether or not the issue is decided tomorrow, believes that recycling is a big part of Arcata's future.
