Love takes all forms and for 15-year-old Harmony Sorter, love has taken the form of ballet. “I think I’ve always been a ballet dancer. I just love dancing around, I usually dance around the house,” Harmony says. Harmony has been studying to be a ballet dancer since she was 4-years-old.
Heather Sorter used to dance, as well. She is Harmony’s dance instructor, and her mother. “There are only 2 Americans in the Bolshoi Ballet Company, a female and a male. So it's pretty new,” Heather Sorter explains. The 15-year old teen will be studying at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia, one of the world’s most oldest and prestigious dance institutions. “It's really exciting, actually. It's kind of hard to believe that they picked me.... 'Cause I’m like, I’m not really that good,” Harmony says.A humble Humboldt teen who will soon join an elite group of world-renowned dancers. We tell Harmony, hopefully in 8 months time when she comes back to Humboldt County you will have picked up Russian, you will like cabbage a little bit more. She replies, “es, maybe…If she doesn’t develop a taste for borscht she’ll at least further develop her ballet skills.“Strength and flexibility and probably point work, too,” Harmony explains these are the skills she wants to improve.Because for Harmony ballet is love... “Kinda makes me free. I like the feeling... Makes me happy,” the teenager happily chirps.
Harmony Sorter will be going off to Russia next month and she'll be back in Humboldt County next summer. Kay Recede kiemkayr@gmail.com
