CSU TUITION INCREASE: Board Approves Measure
Humboldt State University students may be paying more for classes starting in January. The CSU system is looking at a five percent tuition hike considering the passing of Governor Brown’s Propostion 30, which will be voted on during November elections. Today the CSU board of trustees has approved the plan to raise tuition by five percent if Prop 30 fails. It breaks down to a $150 tutition raise at HSU. Officials at Humboldt State say that these hikes are making public universities less accessible for students to attend."The assumption on the part of the public was that education is a public trust and that its an investment in our economic future,” said HSU spokesman Paul Mann, “And now it’s considered much more of an individual privilege."If Prop 30 passes, CSU officials will take back the nine percent tuition hike that took effect this fall and issue refund checks.
