Murl Harpham was officially sworn in as the chief of the Eureka Police Department in a special ceremony at City Council chambers today. Mayor Frank Jager swore the veteran interim chief into the official chief position at noon Wednesday. It was a ceremony city officials say has been 55 years in the making because of Harpham’s long history serving the department. Harpham talked about his plans for moving the department forward but also said he was overwhelmed by the amount of people who turned out to support him, while City Manager Dave Tyson said he wasn’t surprised by that at all.
