NEW SOCIAL NETWORK DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR NEIGHBORHOODS

Manila, CA- A new social networking site has made its way to Humboldt County. It’s called Nextdoor, because the site is only for neighborhoods. Steven Vander Meer, a Manila resident is working to spread the word in his neighborhood about the new site. He said, "Its for neighbors in neighborhoods to connect with each other, share information...we started using it to organize neighborhood watch groups."

According to the website, next door can be used for all kinds of communication. Vander Meer told us that the site has become useful when reporting criminal activity in the neighborhood. He said, "A real close by neighbor across the street from me posted on the site that he noticed the previous night someone had messed with his gas cap.”

Small places like manila will also find this site as a useful tool to meet new neighbors. Vander Meer said, "We use to have a market. We don't even have a market anymore. There's just no where for a casual public meeting space."

Humboldt County officials are also encouraging residents to use the site in their neighborhoods. Humboldt County Public Information Specialist Sean Quincy said "I think the biggest reason why the county wanted to get involved in this because as a community I think we have a shared interest in getting to know each other and keep that close knit feeling."

Quincy can recall a time when the site was useful to his neighborhood. He said, "I’ve used it over the weekend when we had the earth quake. I sent out an alert to my neighborhood."
