VICTIMS IDENTIFIED IN DOUBLE FATAL CRASH; NEAR BLUE LAKE
HUMBOLDT -- A double fatal crash involving two local business owners occurred on highway 299 Tuesday night, and it is sending shockwaves through the local community.
Officers and firefighters arrived on scene near the Essex Lane exit just before 8 p.m. to discover a major collision involving a Chrysler PT cruiser and a utility truck.
According to CHP, 61-year old Eureka resident Francis Robert "Frank" Borgelin was driving east on highway 299 in a GMC Box Truck, when he collided with a 2001 PT cruiser, being driven by 58-year old Linda Scott from Eureka. Officers say Scott was going the wrong way on the freeway. She was traveling west in the eastbound lanes.
Both Borgelin and Scott died at the scene.
The highway was closed for almost 4 hours as emergency crews tended to the crash.
The Humboldt County Coroner's office says the victims sustained severe blunt force trauma and did not survive the impact. Their office will run a toxicology report to see if there was any sort of driver impairment, although that report will likely take a couple of weeks to complete.
It's a collision that's hitting the local business community hard. Frank Borgelin was the owner of "Frank's Appliance Repair" in Eureka, while Linda Scott was a co-owner of "E & O Bowl" on Glendale drive -- nearby to where the accident occurred.
The crash remains under investigation. We'll have updates as they become available.
