Voters in Ferndale are left wondering who will be the next mayor.

Both Stuart Titus and Kenneth Weller each have 287 votes as of Wednesday night, but that could change.

County clerk Carolyn Crnich said the Humboldt County Elections and Voter Registration office received about 4,800 mail in ballots, and about 2,500 provisional ballots on the day of the election.

Crnich said those ballots may be able to tip the scale and determine a mayor.

In the unlikely event that there’s a tie it would go back to the city of Ferndale for a special election.

The two candidates contending in the mayor’s race are retired businessman Kenneth Weller and Vice Mayor of the Ferndale City Council Stu Titus..

Both candidates received just a little more than 48 percent of the votes during Tuesday’s election.

Crnich said the office is working on getting the rest of the votes calculated so the public can get an idea of who the winner is—but it could take a few weeks.

“We have more ballots to count and there's a good chance something will be decided,” Crnich said. “It could be very close as it is now.”
