VAN FLIPS DOWN EMBANKMENT; DRIVER EXTRICATED 50-FEET BELOW
HUMBOLDT -- A van rolls 50-feet down an embankment near Trinidad. California Highway Patrol is reporting the van drove off of Scenic Drive just south of Main Street.
Emergency personnel responded around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday to find a white van on it's roof.
Fire officials tell us the driver was stuck inside the car. His head, chest, shoulders, and hips were all pinned inside the collapsed vehicle.
The van ended up flipped upside-down, coming to rest on a tree stump and stopping next to a drainage ditch, which made things very difficult for a safe rescue.
Arcata Fire Battalion Chief Sean Campbell says the roof was supporting the weight of vehicle, so unorthodox cuts into the van had to be made which is why it took so long to get the driver out.
The unidentified man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries.
