NEW PSA DETERS DRIVING WHILE IMPAIRED
Eureka, CA-After an increase in statistics for fatal DUI collisions, the District Attorney’s office along with local law enforcement and News Channel 3, have created a PSA to discourage drivers from driving impaired this holiday season.
In 2012… DUI related accidents have nearly doubled. In Eureka alone, there have been 67 DUI related traffic collisions. 32 people were injured, 3 of those were fatalities.
With multiple Humboldt County law enforcement agencies dealing with the same issue, the DA’s office wants to remind motorists to think before they drink.
For a local bar owner, Dave Kadivar, he watches for customers that may be too impaired to drive. He’s willing to step in if necessary.
"I’ve had to take someone's keys and I know it's not the legal thing to do, but at the same time it felt right. I didn't want him to go kill somebody; God forbid. And ah, he wanted to fight me over it but luckily because of my size and my business partner Steve, we finally got some sense talked into him and he hopped into a cab and he actually came back the next day and thanked me." Dave Said.
Maybe after seeing this PSA, many of us will be thankful to our local law enforcement agencies that want to protect us all.
Eureka Traffic Officer, Greg Hill says, "It's ok to go out and celebrate the holidays; just make sure you have a designated driver, and plan ahead. Don't just go out there and drink and think it's ok that you just had a couple of beers and get in your vehicle and drive away. Because it's not drunk driving, it's impaired driving."
The PSA will air on News Channel 3 Starting this weekend.
