TRIBE TO FUND NEW SHERIFF'S DEPUTY; HCSO ANNOUNCES
Sheriff Mike Downey has announced a new Humboldt County Sheriff's Deputy position, completely paid for by the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria.
Recently, Sheriff Downey and Humboldt County First District Supervisor Rex Bohn were approached by the Rancheria, who offered to pay for a full-time Deputy Sheriff to patrol the Eel River Valley from Scotia to Fields Landing.
The tribe proposed the idea to increase law enforcement presence, and told the Sheriff they wanted to assist with law enforcement for community members.
First District Supervisor Rex Bohn was instrumental in facilitating this agreement, Downey says.
The agreement will be in effect for calendar years 2013/2014 with a possible two-year extension.
The initial two-year agreement equates to a donation of $300,000.
The Sheriff's Office currently has two open deputy positions which they are currently recruiting for, and 15 frozen deputy positions due to budgetary constraints.
