ARCATA HEALTH CENTER SELLING "SUNLIGHT": HOW THIS CAN HELP SEASONAL DEPRESSION
Arcata, CA- the rain like today can bring seasonal depression to many North Coast residents. Studies have found that the lack of sun can makes some people more tired and slow. But now there’s a place in Arcata that’s selling sunlight. Thomas Edrington at the Arcata Holistic Health Institute is using a sunbeam to help those with seasonal depression. He said, "Your body is programmed to respond to light especially in the morning...sort of to decrease the hormones that make you sleepy."Clinically approved, doctors say this machine can give you a more active and awake brain. Doctor Steven Roth from Humboldt County Metal Health says seasonal depression can cause people to eat more, crave carbohydrates and this kind of behavior can last till spring. Dr. Roth added, "The research on all spectrum light specially for seasonal disorder has shown to be helpful."He adds that seasonal depression can affect sleep patterns. Making it very difficult to get out of bed when it’s cold and rainy. Dr. Roth added, "They feel down. They withdrawal, they become more irritable. And have a harder time relating."The California Department of Health says seasonal affect disorder decrease as we age, it usually affects people between the ages of 15-55.
