TIPS TO CONSIDER FOR SAFE HOLIDAY TRAVEL
Before you go over the river and through the woods this holiday, there are some travel preparations you might want to consider.
First up, chains.
"In this area you should always carry chains,” said Caltrans Public Information Officer Phil Frisbie Jr. “Because you have to go through mountain passes to leave Humboldt County in any direction."
Frisbie says it’s best to try out chains before you head out on the road.
“Because you don’t want to find out on the side of the road that they’re the wrong size and you don’t know how to put them on,” Frisbie said.
Which brings us to number two: having supplies ready in your vehicle.
"If they get stuck in a long line because of a road closure or long delays, they should have food, water, clothes, maybe some blankets," he said.
He adds that a flashlight and shovel will come in handy, if for whatever reason the vehicle ends up off the road. Safe speeds should reduce that risk.
Before you even leave, put the extra key to your vehicle in your pocket. Drivers will get out of their vehicle and leave the keys inside. And just like that it’s too late. But if you have your extra key in your pocket, you’ll be good to go.
And last but not least, let someone know where you’re going, what route you’re taking and when you plan to be there.
"In case you don't show up in time, someone will know where to look for you," Frisbie said.
