COUNTDOWN TO CRAB SEASON: POTS SET AND BOATS READY
EUREKA, CA- After several delays the start of commercial crab season kicks off at midnight, and crab fishermen have been out all morning preparing. Crab fisherman Robert Elam said, "Once the whistle went off I was ready to go."
It’s been delay after delay for crab fisherman here in Humboldt County, and they are eager to get started. Crab fisherman Tom Fulkerson added, "We’ve had plenty of time to get ready. We are pretty ready to go."
The delay in crab season meant no crab dinner over the holidays, but for the crab fisherman it meant no work. One crab fisherman told us, "We are very excited to get out there. Since salmon season in October we haven't worked. We need this."
Crab fisherman Dan Snell added, "We’re all excited. Of course it's always hard to wait because we are all eager to go to work."
And to work they go, Woodly Island has been brought back to life. Crab fisherman and boats have been out all morning setting crab traps. Snell added, "It’s really busy this year… trying to get their gear in the water so we can start hauling gear tonight at midnight."
The bay packed with crab fisherman all looking to score large amounts of crab. Elam added, "Well I’m expecting big money but you never know till you get out there and get everything situated."
The pots have been set and now all they have to do is wait for midnight.
