BREAK-IN AND THEFT AT SMITH RIVER ELEMENTARY
School officials are reporting dozens of items stolen overnight from the school’s gymnasium, an estimated loss in the thousands of dollars. They say the thieves “jimmied” the locks to gain access. School staff say aside from the items stolen something unusual was left behind… this black and silver cross appeared to have been dropped on a bed in one of the construction trailers. They’re hoping it may identify the suspects in the break in. The school gym is under construction; most of what was taken were tools and supplies. The school’s principal tells News Channel 3 last night was the only night construction staff has not slept at the site since they started building. If you have any information you’re asked to call the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office at 464-4191.
