TRINIDAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SEEKS 10K FROM CITY COUNCIL TO IMPROVE TOURISM
TRINIDAD, CA- The tourism season is just a few months away and to prepare, the Trinidad Chamber of Commerce is asking the City Council for over $10,000.The City of Trinidad relies heavily on the tourist season and the Chamber of Commerce says they work year round to attract visitors. Chamber President, Dennis Koutouzos added, "the chamber does a great deal to promote tourism in Trinidad, bring people in. Help get them oriented here show them where things are."Also in the works, a one-stop shop list of hiking trials on their website. The Chamber say hiking paths are a big attraction in Trinidad. Koutouzos added, "A lot of the people coming to Trinidad are tourist looking for the natural beauty of the place that’s what draws people here."This additional $10,000 will come from the new sales tax increase that was passed in November. City Manager, Karen Suiker added, "its considered a transient occupancy tax and it's ten percent that's assessed on the over night lodging and for bed and breakfast."The City of Trinidad says they rely heavily on the money generated from the tax. Suiker said, "the transient occupancy taxes to support law enforcement services, public works services. Related to maintain the trails."Currently the Chamber receives $2,000 from the sales tax. After their presentation tomorrow night the City Council can decide whether or not they will give any additional funding to the Chamber.
