Trinidad, CA- Last week hundreds of people attended the first annual Green Diamond Resource Company public meeting on the topic of clear-cutting near Strawberry Rock. The company offered a compromise, but for some it just wasn’t good enough.
From atop the Humboldt County landmark known as Strawberry Rock, the view of Trinidad Bay is breath-taking. For the past year, a group called “Friends Of The Trinidad Forests” has been trying to stop the Green Diamond Resource Company from cutting down trees that sit on the company owned property. VP and General Manager Neal Ewald says his company does not plan to cut trees in that area this year, but they are planning to in the future. So far the clear-cutting company has proposed to create a public easement along the one-mile trail. They’re going to try to preserve 24-acres of trees that are near the area as well as preserve the rock itself. “We listened to them and we're going to try to make this work and try to figure out how to put a project together that suits the needs of the community and I think we'll make it work for our business too," said Ewald.
