CRESCENT CITY GIRL CELEBRATES ORGAN DONATION ANNIVERSARY
A Crescent City girl is celebrating a special anniversary. It’s been one year since Destany Barker underwent a liver transplant that her life depended on. News channel 3’s Monica Jacquez spent the morning with Destany and her family, who’s thankful for the community support, and thankful she’s alive one year later. Destany Barker, now 4 years old, celebrated another year of life. But it’s no ordinary birthday, it was one year ago this month that Destany was undergoing a liver transplant. Her Mother Priscilla Masseo told us, "It’s been amazing, she’s happier. She’s a character, she's a hole new person."When other children were running around outside, Destany, 3-years old when she had the surgery was lying in a hospital. Masseo recalled that day, "I was pacing up and down the hallways. I didn't talk to anybody. I couldn’t wait for her to get out of surgery. I wanted to see what she looked like."Now healthy and happy, Destany’s story has inspired a community. Her family says they are grateful for all the support. Masseo added, "I want to thank everyone from Del Norte and Humboldt County, for everything that they have done. I know there was a family in Fortuna that sent Destany and I a care package. And I just want to thank them."The little girl, who once went through a long and stressful surgery, now tells us she wants to be a doctor. Masseo added, "And now she is like a little mini teenager. She acts 16, she tells me what to do."Now she is your typical preschooler, carefree and full of personality. Masseo added, "I thank god that he gave her a second chance."Destany celebrated her 4thbirthday last night. Friends, family, and members of the community all came out to support this courageous young girl.
