Local Residents React To Same-Sex Marriage Ban In California

Drayton and his partner have been together for five years and he says they’re not giving up.
ldquo;Ultimately I think every major movement has taken much longer than we would hope. But I do believe the higher courts are going to decide in our favor of equal rights,” says Drayton.
Proposition eight was passed in November 2008 and recently overturned by a federal judge two weeks ago. Just yesterday it was put on hold until judges could iron out whether same sex marriage is constitutional.
ldquo;Certainly I felt some comfort in knowing that there are some judges that honor democracy. I’m certain this will have to go to the Supreme Court,” said Gene Welling who’s against same-sex marriage.
Welling is okay with same-sex couples having the same benefits as long as they pick a different name other than “marriage.”
ldquo;I think it’s appropriate if we want to have another definition of relationships between men and men, and women and women who share great love and affection,” said Welling.
