Both the College of the Redwoods men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second as a group at the Golden Valley Conference championships at West Valley High School in Cottonwood on Thursday, advancing to the Nor-Cal Championships next week at Folsom Lake.

There were two exciting finishes in high school football. In a battle of the top teams in the Big 5, Eureka looks to stay perfect at Fortuna. Ferndale was trying to earn its first conference win at Hoopa. The experts select their favorite football uniforms. And Humboldt State is back on the road trying to get that first victory.


McKinleyville's Morgin Coonfield tied the meet record at the West Valley Cross Country Invitational in Cottonwood. Her time was 18:06. Second place was Hannah Davis from Shasta with a time of 18:52. Coonfield's time places her 2nd all-time on the course record list and this is the host site of the Northern Section's meet.

For most Athletes of the Week, becoming good at a sport takes years of practice. But for some, it just comes naturally. As News Channel 3's Chet Davis explains, that's the case for Katelyn Hill. 

College of the Redwoods hung around, but, in the end, was no match for the Southwestern Oregon volleyball team, falling in straight sets, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18 on Tuesday in Coos Bay, Ore and snapping its two-match win streak.

Humboldt State Cycling continues to lead the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference after the second weekend of collegiate mountain bike racing at Sky Tavern near Reno on Sept. 28 and 29.

October 1, 2013. It’s a day Eureka’s Ashley Gutierrez will always remember. The junior golfer had a hole-in-one. It happened Tuesday afternoon at the Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville… On the par-3 12th hole, from 167 yards away. Gutierrez had the lowest score and finished first with an 86.

The Mad River Elite United U-12 boys soccer team took first place at the Wesco Apple Classic in Sebastopol. They earned wins against Marin, Santa Rosa, Napa and Petaluma.
