The nation observed an anniversary today. It wasn’t an anniversary of joy from say fifty years of marriage or twenty five years on the job. It was for the creation of the Amber Alert.
The California Highway Patrol joined law enforcement agencies around the country in observing National Amber Alert Awareness Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the child abduction that led to the creation of the system.
Dallas-Fort Worth area law enforcement and media representatives were moved to create the system in 1996 after the kidnapping and slaying of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman. Monday was the 18th anniversary of the child's abduction. The Amber Alert program has helped recover 679 abducted children since it’s inception.
