2 Structures lost, 1 injury; Investigators suspect arson

HOOPA- A grass fire spread quickly through Hoopa consuming two structures and injuring one firefighter. Investigators suspect the cause of the fire is arson.

According to the Hoopa Valley Tribe's PIO, Kristan Korns, the fire burned a total of eight acres, destroying a garage and home within Squires Housing, between Marshall Lane and Highway 96. One Captain of the Hoopa Wildland Fire Department suffered from minor burns.

The fire started after 2 p.m. and spread aggressively across the highway, before stopping forward progress around 4 p.m. 

Homes in the Squires housing area near Marshall Lane were evacuated. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol controlled traffic, closing hwy 96 to drivers.

Calfire provided air attack, with ground attack by engines and crews from the Hoopa Volunteer and Hoopa Wildland Fire Department. There are two investigators from the Bureau of Indian Affairs investigating the fire.

This year to date there has been a total of 106 fires in Hoopa.
