80k grant to Arcata to fight sea level rise

ARCATA- The City of Arcata has been awarded a $86,000 to prepare for sea level rise. The California Coastal Commission awarded the grant which will help to build fringe salt water marshes or 'living shorelines' along Humboldt Bay.

The project will protect the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary and Wastewater Treatment Plant which border Humboldt Bay. The city plans to build a 20 acre salt water marsh which will eliminate the need to build a sea wall.

20 other counties, city's and non-profits were awarded the grant. The ocean is expected to rise 16 to 55 inches as a result of climate change.
