Abalone diver dies near Fort Bragg
Elk, CA. - An abalone diver has lost his life after getting caught in rough surf near Fort Bragg.
Mendocino Sheriff’s Deputies say 50-year old Feng Chang Wei, of San Francisco was diving with four other friends for abalone near Elk, California around 20-miles south of Fort Bragg when sea conditions got rough and started pushing all the divers towards a dangerous sea cave. Wei unfortunately got pushed into the cave. The other divers attempted a rescue but were overtaken by the waves.
The Mendocino Sheriff’s Department was called and helicopters, boats and rescue divers tried to locate Wei but were unsuccessful because of the rough conditions. Tuesday morning a little after 8, members of Search and Rescue located Wei still in the cave. He had succumbed to injuries. His body was transported to Fort Bragg where family identified him.
The cause of death is still a question pending a coroner’s autopsy.
