Apartment fire in Arcata kills one person

ARCATA- One person is dead after a fire erupted inside an Arcata apartment complex Wednesday afternoon.

Jenny Williamson, a Fire Prevention Specialist with the Arcata Fire Protection District has confirmed that there was at least one fatality, but said all other injuries are unknown.

The fire started at the Arcata Garden Apartments on Alliance Road near Westwood Court around 1 p.m. Williamson said. The cause of the fire is under investigation is being conducted by the Arcata Fire Protection District and the Arcata Police Department.

Heavy black smoke and flames were visible from the apartment when crews first arrived she said. It was reported that one person was trapped inside.

A total of three apartments were damaged. It is not known if the person who died inside was a resident.

Several other agencies responded, including Calfire, Humboldt Bay Fire and Blue Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
