Arcata Council to consider expanding smoking and drinking ban
ARCATA- The City of Arcata will discuss increasing their smoking ban ordinance and open container law within city limits Wednesday.
Following residents and business owner's complaints about groups gathering outside of the smoking ban boundary, the council directed staff to look into expanding both boundaries.
A proposed plan by staff will increase the smoking ban west to extend from J to K street. The council will also consider expanding the city's Alcohol Consumption Prohibition, an ordinance that limits the area where people can drink openly outdoors. The change would expand the ban to public streets, sidewalks, parking lots and other property owned or leased by the city if adopted. Currently, drinking is only prohibited outdoors within the Downtown Plaza, the Union Town Shopping Area and North Town.
The council will consider the proposal on Wednesday at Arcata City Hall at 6 p.m.
