Arcata council to move smoking boundaries back near plaza
ARCATA - The City Council of Arcata was expected to expand the smoking boundaries at Wednesday night’s meeting but public outcry brought a different result.
A full house met in the council chambers to discuss expanding the smoking boundaries. Those boundaries that currently exist are a result of a previous decision made by council to expand limits from the Arcata Plaza out to J Street.
Resident and business owners complained that expanding the smoking ordinance has only caused groups of transients to congregate where the ordinance ends. The council agreed to pull the boundary back in to the plaza, surrounding sidewalks and the transit facility area.
The proposal will be reintroduced with the different boundaries on the March 18th agenda with additional proposals for the "walk-through" concept and designated smoking areas.
