ARCATA- Arcata Fire Protection District will continue their parcel fee for residents within their fire district. A committee made up of citizens within the district recommended that the fire district keep the $22 parcel fee to continue the additional revenue for the fire district.
Fire Chief Desmond Cowan said the revenue is needed for the district to grow with the community. "We really need to prepare to move onto the next step," said Cowan.
Voters approved a ballot measure in 2006 to pay a fee to help fund the fire district. Cowan said since voters approved the measure the fire district has brought in $1.3 million dollars every year. Since then fire district has purchased five new fire trucks and doubled their on-duty career staff.
