ARCATA - the official ground breaking of Arcata’s Foster Avenue and Rails with Trails projects took place at Shay Park Wednesday afternoon.

The ceremony began with a few words from Mayor Winkler and Public Works Director, Doby Class, noting that the project is almost 40 years in the making. City councilmembers then dug in their shovels for a moment of celebration. Foster Avenue will be extended east, to continue transportation to Sunset Avenue.  The Rails with Trails project will increase bike and pedestrian accessibility along the previous rail line down to Samoa Boulevard.

"I think the people of Arcata will look back on this, and this will change this part of Arcata in a very positive way and I think people are really going to enjoy this connect from the skate park all the way down to the Arcata Marsh. You'll be able to hike or bike all the way down there, so it will be just a great asset to this part of Arcata. We're looking forward to it,“ said Arcata City Councilmember Mark Wheetley.
