Arcata City Council unanimously approved the reintroduced plastic bag ban and extended the date for business to charge for paper bags.
Under the ordinance businesses would not have to charge customers ten cents for regular size plastic bags until August 2014, and not have to charge anything for small or decorative gift bags. The change will incorporate all retail stores into the ordinance and take effect in Feb. 2014.
On October 30, staff met with local business owners to receive input on the new ordinance. A staff report said business owners were concerned about implementing the ordinance.
Plastic bags will still be available at no cost for produce, meats and bulk food items. Staff said the ordinance is tailor fit for Arcata.
