ARCATA- The Arcata City Council instructed staff to move forward with constructing a polystyrene ban at Arcata restaurants and food retailers. Over the next month staff will get input from business owners over the impact of the ordinance.
The city is considering the ban in response to studies that show that the styrene compound in the material leaches into food and drinks. The product also does not biodegrade and can pollute the ocean and local waterways.
The city will bring the ordinance back to the city council after discussing the proposal with businesses that would be affected.
