Arcata Police read and give books to schoolchildren
ARCATA-In a small chair, the Arcata Police Chief sits and reads a story to a dozen excited kindergarten students. The event is designed to get young students comfortable with law enforcement and eager to read.
At Coastal Grove Charter School on Thursday, kindergarten through fifth graders were given books by Arcata Police as part of the Cops N' Kids program. Students loaded into the department's Mobile Command Unit and were each given books donated by the women's group, Quota International of Eureka.
"It's really our role as law enforcement to not only be out there as police officers, but to be an inspiration to young people," said Lt. Ryan Peterson, who handed out books to students.
The department will pass out hundreds of books to students at schools in Arcata as part of the program in the upcoming months.
With the recent walk aways, should the Sheriff's Office continue it's inmate work crew program?
