Arcata receives "A" rating from American Lung Association
ARCATA- Arcata has received an "A" grade from the American Lung Association after passing their smoking ban ordinance last year. The city has a better grade than in 2012 when the received a "C" grade for the category of 'smoke free outdoor area.'
In June, the city council voted unanimously to pass the ordinance that prohibited smoking within the downtown area, Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary and Community Forrest.
The city has a better overall rating, up from D to C, from the association that grades cities countrywide on their tobacoo control.
Environmental Services Director, Mark Andre, said the ordinance has gone further than just helping prevent second hand smoke, but by reducing litter and trash from discarded cigarettes.
