Arcata starts charging for paper bags August 1st. Plastic Bag Ban in full effect.
The City of Arcata’s bag ban goes into full effect tomorrow as businesses will begin to charge 10 cents a paper bag should you need one. Arcata joins around 30 other cities state wide that have adopted similar restrictions. Humboldt county and the state of California are studying the issue and may move to come up with versions as well.
Officials say the bag ban will decrease waterway debris, which is hazardous to marine animals and birds and help keep storm drains from clogging and littering the environment. There are around 150 retail establishments in Arcata involved in the bag ban.
