ARCATA - A local Arcata teacher is getting a trip of a lifetime. Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have selected Union Street Charter's Greg Gaiera as a Grosvenor teacher fellow.

Gaiera is one of 35 fellows selected out of 2,700 applicants. He will first travel to the National Geographic Society's Headquarters in Washington D.C. for workshops and outreach planning.  Then this summer, he'll go on a 17 day arctic voyage to Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland. The only catch, he must bring his learning experiences back to the classroom and community.

“National Geographic and Lindblad expeditions have the expectation that I'm going to share this with as many people as possible. So when I come back, I'm going to create curriculum to teach about the arctic to my class, my fourth graders. I'm also expected to do, excited I should say, to do some outreach to the community, to talk about not only the arctic but also environmental issues that the arctic is facing," said Greg Gaiera, Union Street Charter Teacher Fellow.
