The Avenue of the Giants will be temporarily closed next week near Weott as workers start in to repair a broken pipeline.
This comes three months after nearly twenty thousand gallons of water were stolen from one of the water tanks. In an effort to refill the tank, a water line broke forcing the town to conserve their water. A local state of emergency was declared three times by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors. The pipeline takes water from the intake site at the Eel River to a treatment plant, which produces drinking water to the community. The Avenue of the Giants will be closed just north of Burlington State Campground to just south of Newton Road beginning at 7 am Monday until 6 pm Friday. Caltrans says motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians will still be able to access Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
