Barber in Fortuna searching for new location following fire
FORTUNA- A Fortuna barber is in search of a new location. His shop was destroyed in the Star Hotel Building fire in January, and now, he’s looking for a fresh start.
Fortuna native Shannon Kelly cut hair in Eureka for 10 years before opening Kelly’s Barbershop in Fortuna in 2012.
"I saw that it was available so I figured I wouldn't have to go to Eureka any more to cut hair and I might as well do it in my hometown, that way I had a chance to display my sports memorabilia and get to see some of the people I hadn't seen in years," said Shannon Kelly.
A customer of Kelly's Barbershop, Jeff Pratt, says getting a haircut from Kelly was more than just a haircut.
"I could be at ease with my barber and be able to talk to him and there's not a lot of that around. Sometimes people just kind of get you in and get you out just to get the next guy in and I just had it has a good experience," said Pratt.
On the morning of January 28, Kelly’s friend knocked on his door, and told him the Star Hotel Building was on fire.
"I wasn't sure if I was dreaming it or it was actually happening so I jumped in his rig and we came down here and it was a sad tale to watch it," Kelly said.
Kelly says seeing his business burn was surreal.
"I would of thought I'd be here for most of the rest of my working life, so sometimes you go to bed at night and you wake up tomorrow and you wish it didn't happen, but it did," said Kelly.
But Kelly says he immediately knew he wanted to keep cutting hair in Fortuna. Now, he is working with the owners of a building on Main Street in Fortuna to possibly have a new location for Kelly’s Barbershop.
"I'll be able to as long as I have a sink and a bathroom and I have a barber chair," Kelly said.
However, Kelly is still asking residents to let him know of possible locations for his barbershop.
"There might be a place that I've missed by looking around and from making calls and from day to day, you'll never know who's going to be in business and who's not," said Kelly.
If you have a possible location for Kelly’s Barbershop, you can contact the Fortuna Business Improvement District at (707) 725-9261.
