Battery recycling at Fortuna City Hall
FORTUNA- To keep old batteries from polluting their community, Fortuna city officials have set up a recycling center inside City Hall.
The town has collected hundreds of batteries that residents have brought in. Batteries that are not disposed properly can leak chemicals into groundwater and pollute drinking water, creeks, rivers and streams said Mike Johnson, General Services Superintendent of Fortuna.
"To recycle your batteries and dispose of them properly you take care of the City of Fortuna and the environment we live in," he said.
The city accepts all alkaline and rechargeable batteries and can be dropped off in two buckets inside City Hall's lobby.
"We want to take care of the environment that we all live in," said Johnson. "We are in a position to bring that service to the city."
