Both the College of the Redwoods men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second as a group at the Golden Valley Conference championships at West Valley High School in Cottonwood on Thursday, advancing to the Nor-Cal Championships next week at Folsom Lake.
CR’s Gabe Best and Elizabeth Duncan each earned All-GVC honors with top-seven individual finishes.
“We didn’t have everyone here and healthy, but we still stepped up and ran well,” said CR head coach Reed Elmore. “This is a tough course that throws everything but the kitchen sink at you, so I’m proud of how we rose to the challenge.”
Best finished the 4-mile course in 25 minutes, 10 seconds, finishing just 10 seconds behind fifth place, while Liam Burns finished on the all-conference bubble, placing eighth with a time of 25:26.
“A few of our guys were sick but they still ran well enough to beat Shasta, which is ranked No. 14 in Northern California,” Elmore said.
For the women, it was Duncan who paced the Corsairs on the 3-mile course, finishing sixth with a time of 22:30, just 30 seconds behind the leader, while Beatrice Caffe, who was battling stomach illness, placed 10th (24:33).
Both Corsair teams will travel to Beal’s Point at Folsom Lake for the Nor-Cal Championships next Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
The top runners at that meet advance to the state championships at Woodward Park in Fresno Nov. 23.
