Caltrans worker hit by car identified, flown to a Sonoma County hospital
MCKINLEYVILLE- Caltrans released the name of the man who was hit while on the job Thursday in McKinleyville. According to Caltrans, Edward Holgersen was hit by a 1998 Cadillac driven by George Hurt, 84 of McKinleyville. CHP said Hurt was driving westbound approaching the Caltrans worker who was holding a "slow" sign while directing traffic for a bridge crew. Officers said Hurt failed to stop and hit the worker head on.
Officials said they want to remind motorists that this year's construction season is still open, and many workers are still in the middle of completing projects before the winter weather begins.
Caltrans District 1 Director Charlie Fielder said, “It is really important for people to know that when they enter into a work zone to slow down and pay attention. We work very hard to make the highway safe for all of the motorists out there, and we need to make it safe for our highway workers too because everybody need to get home safe."
Holgersen was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and later flown to the intensive care unit of a Sonoma County hospital where he remains in stable condition. As for the driver, CHP said there are no criminal charges being pressed at this time and DUI does not appear to be a factor. The incident is still under investigation.
