EUREKA- Humboldt County now has 21 new Child Passenger Safety Technicians and a new Child Passenger Safety Instructor after various state and local agencies teamed up to hold an instructional course this week.
Friday was the last day of the four day training. At the Child Car Seat Check, techs with Humboldt Bay Fire, the Eureka Police Department, California Highway Patrol and the Humboldt County Department of Public Health used the skills they learned throughout the week. The event was held in the Kmart parking lot in Eureka. Car seats were evaluated by the technicians as the technicians were graded on their interactions with the community. EPD officials say nine out of 10 car seats are installed incorrectly, which is why having more technicians and an additional instructor in Humboldt County is important.
"It's important to have technicians at all different agencies, whether it be the Eureka Police Department, Humboldt Bay Fire, California Highway Patrol, that way a person that needs a check on a child car seat can go to one of the many agencies across the community instead of just one or two maybe in Eureka. We'll have agencies in Arcata, Fortuna, Garberville and Southern Humboldt that can now have their seats checked," said Suzie Owsley, a Police Services Officer with the EPD.
