Cesar Chavez Day to be celebrated at Jefferson Community Center through volunteering
EUREKA- Tuesday is Cesar Chavez's birthday, a community organizer who fought for workers rights while advocating against racial and economic discrimination. In honor of Cesar Chavez Day, volunteers in Eureka will celebrate by doing some community organizing of their own.
More than 150 volunteers, including some from the Redwood Community Action Agency and Humboldt State University, will work on service projects at the Jefferson Community Center. Volunteers will plant 23 street trees around the center, prepare the bocci court surfaces, remove the A Street fence and fill in several planters.
"Tomorrow is a really important day. We're going to be getting together to combat some social injustice of our own by building a beautiful park for our neighbors. We'll be working together to improve this community center. This community center is really a safe haven for everyone to come together," said Heidi Benzonelli, the President of the Westside Community Improvement Association.
Anyone interested in volunteering should arrive at the Jefferson Community Center on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
