Chili Cook-off marks start of Fortuna Rodeo week activities
FORTUNA- Fortuna’s rodeo week festivities began Tuesday with the annual Chili Cook-off organized by the Fortuna Chamber of Commerce. at the event, 20 vendors and local community members competed for several award titles including Fortuna’s Best Chili.
Competitor booths lined main street, where visitors were able to taste and vote for their favorite chili while listening to local music.
Tuesday’s cook-off is the first of several events this week. City officials say hundreds from across Humboldt County are expected to come out for the fun.
“The best thing about it is just the variety of what you see out here,” said Chili Cook-off Coordinator, Lisa Whitchurch. “I mean, all of the chili's taste differently, all of the competitors present their wears and their personalities differently so entertainment value is huge. But also you just get to come down and see sunny Fortuna and it just ushers in the rodeo week so that people get an idea of what else is coming up for this week.”
Chili Cook-off winners:
Cattlemen’s Association Best Beef Chili: Fortuna Sunrise Rotary
Best Professional Chili: Kidlicious/Springville Steak
Rookie of the Year: Redwood Capital Bank
Fortuna’s Hottest Chili: California Conservation Corps
