On 3/5/2014 at approximately 10:59 p.m. CHP Dispatch received a call of a Silver Toyota Pickup over the side on SR-162, in Mendocino County. The collision was reported near mile post marker 18 on 162, east of Poonkinney Road. The involved pickup was an 05 Toyota Tundra, being driven by an 89 year old male, out of Covelo, CA (Name withheld pending notification of next of kin). For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left SR-162 and traveled approximately 300 feet down the steep embankment, located to the south of the roadway. The vehicle was located by rescue personnel unstably perched on the hillside. A high angle rescue team had to be called out from Little Lake to help secure the vehicle. After the vehicle was secured the driver was finally able to be extracted shortly after midnight. Due to injuries sustained in the collision, the driver, and only occupant of the vehicle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mendocino County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and took custody of the decedent.
