The California Highway Patrol gave an early gift for the holidays. It was the gift of safety.

Parents and caregivers came to the special free event at the Fortuna Fire Department today. Authorities gave valuable information on proper car seat installation and checked for safety.

The CHP says across the nation 73 percent of child restraints are misused in a manner that can cause serious if not fatal injuries to a child.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to continue to participate by giving the gift of safety. For more information on car seat safety or to get your car seat checked, contact Matt Harvey at the California Highway Patrol at (707) 822-5981 or the Department of Health and Human Services at (707) 476-4991.
