FORTUNA- The Public Information Officer for the California Highway Patrol office in Arcata usually spends his day dealing with the media and writing press releases.  However, he spent Monday reading a Dr. Seuss book to a group of kids in Fortuna.

Officer Matt Harvey read, “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?” to about 20 children, who are up to five years old.  The bilingual group of kids is part of South Fortuna Elementary School’s Play Group.  The reading was in celebration of “Read Across America Day,” a nation-wide, annual reading awareness program that falls on or near the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.  Officer Harvey said the event did more than teach the children in the play group the importance of reading.

"We want to be seen as an agency that's approachable.  And I think this is part of the efforts to do that.  Really, what it comes down to is helping save lives and show kids that, 'Hey law enforcement is friendly, we're positive, we're approachable and we're safe," said Officer Harvey.
