City of Eureka officials: West Avenue to be safer by the end of summer
EUREKA- City officials expect West Avenue to be safer by the end of the summer, after a bid was awarded at last night’s Eureka City Council meeting.
In 2010, experts with U.C. Berkeley’s Transportation Technology Department made 10 recommendations for a safer West Avenue, between Myrtle Avenue and 6th Street. Now, in part thanks to a federal grant, the City of Eureka will begin to implement those recommendations this spring. The stretch of road will be re-paved, and improvements will be made for disabled access.
Also, the intersection of Tydd Street and West Avenue will be improved with an enhanced cross walk with pedestrian activated flashing beacons, increased street lighting, and the addition of a pedestrian island.
"Certainly it's going to improve, especially older, but I think anybody's ability to cross the intersection safely and be seen by the motorists, and also the motorists should be slowing down," said Michael Knight, the Interim City Manager.
