Clarke Historical Museum looks to community to help to fundraise for veteran art exhibit
EUREKA- The Clarke Historical Museum is planning to highlight 157 portraits of local World War II veterans at an upcoming art exhibit. The drawings will be displayed at the Arcata/Eureka Airport on Memorial Day if the museum is able to raise enough money for the project.
Community members can 'Adopt a Veteran' by donating $100 for each portrait as part of a fundraising campaign said Director and Curator of the museum Ben Brown. The donation will help to fund the project and preserve the artwork. 21 different donations have come in for the fundraiser. Brown said more members of the community are needed to fully fund the project.
"We really want a first class exhibit. We really want to do right by these veterans," said Brown.
The portraits were revealed to the veterans and the community on Veterans Day last year. Brown said the museum wants to feature each piece and highlight each veteran that served during World War II.
"What they've lived through is incredible," said Brown. "This was a very changing time in America that they witnessed."
The museum plans to apply for grants to help fund the $20,000 project.
