College of the Redwoods celebrates 50th Anniversary

A Humboldt County institution had an anniversary yesterday. The College of the Redwoods Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the college at their monthly board meeting yesterday.

It was back on January 14th, in 1964, that voters of Humboldt County approved a ballot measure to create the Redwoods Community College District. A 3.6 million dollar bond was raised to construct educational facilities and elect trustees from seven different areas.

The resolution kicks off a year long celebration of educational service to the north coast. The first classes were held at Eureka High School. The first graduation took place at Humboldt State University’s Sequoia Theatre in 1966 and 17 students graduated.

Since then, satellite campuses in Crescent City, Fort Bragg, Garberville, and Hoopa as well as a second Eureka campus have been created. Around nine thousand students a year take classes at one of CR’s facilities.
